Today there are about 1.8 billion young people in the world. A third of the world's young people live in countries emerging from violent conflict, 75 million people are unemployed, and members of political representation in all regions of the world tend to be much older than the population they represent. In the context of complex intergenerational challenges such as climate change and sustainable development, it is increasingly important to actively engage with and support the meaningful participation of youth in policy and decision-making. Since youth form a significant part of society, they have an important and prominent role in supporting society's progress and activating its development process. Many young men and women are already actively promoting a culture of peace, dialogue, justice and peaceful coexistence, trust and reconciliation. In this session the speakers will discuss how to support young people to empower their capacity to act as leaders, partners, and agents for peace, the importance and ways at the national and global level of enthusing and inspiring young people to play an important role in addressing today's global challenges, including those related to protecting our planet from the effects of overconsumption and global warming as well as to make a positive contribution to a sustainable future and a prosperous world.
