SPIEF Starting Day (5 June)

The entomoprotein industry as a biotech component of the circular economy

05 Jun , 15:30–16:30
Discussion
pavilion G, Innovation Space

The key principles of the circular economy are based on resource renewal, waste recycling, and a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Implementation of the circular economy can increase GDP by 12–15%. Many Sustainable Development Goals, especially responsible consumption and production, depend on the introduction of circular economy approaches.
The use of nature-like technologies to restore the balance between nature and the technosphere is one of the most important tasks for the implementation of a closed-cycle economy in the Russian Federation. Involvement of bioconversion technologies in the processing of organic waste is a significant step in ensuring sustainable development. The example of bioconversion technology (production of insect protein) can demonstrate:
• how organic waste can become a base for the production of feed protein for farm-raised animals and aquaculture in the Russian Federation (the annual deficit of feed protein according to the Ministry of Agriculture is about 2.5 million tonnes), taking into account the volume of food waste, it is possible to fully cover the existing deficit;
• possibility to recycle sewage sludge: experiments on growing insects on sludge have shown significant degradation with a significant reduction in its biological hazard (Sibur case study);
• bioconversion through insects as an important area of ecology: it is an environmentally friendly method that produces no harmful emissions and does not require a significant amount of energy.
