Ninth meeting of Russian-Cambodian Intergovernmental Commission

Minister of Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation Nikolai Nikiforov met the Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia for the ninth meeting of the Russian-Cambodian Intergovernmental Commission on trade, economic, scientific, and technological cooperation. Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong, who is also Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, welcomed Nikiforov to Phnom Penh to discuss a wide range of issues concerning bilateral cooperation between the countries.

The topics on the table included improving the legal framework underpinning cooperation in order to ensure new joint projects can be developed and work in progress can be perfected.

The discussions also covered joint work in the agricultural industry, the peaceful use of atomic energy, and law enforcement issues. Participants at the intergovernmental commission focused separately on how to improve the investment climate and create future opportunities for further cooperation in education, science, culture, and tourism.

Nikiforov spoke about the interest expressed by Russian businesses in working with their Cambodian partners. A delegation of interested Russian companies travelled to Cambodia on a business mission as part of the intergovernmental commission meeting. As a result, a list was drawn up of bilateral projects in trade, the economy, and investment until 2020.

During the meeting, Nikiforov invited everyone present to the 20th St Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 16–18, 2016 in Russia.

The Russian-Cambodian Intergovernmental Commission concluded with the signing of a protocol reflecting the countries’ intentions to start up a joint working group on the peaceful use of atomic energy, as well as Cambodia’s desire to sign an agreement on a free trade zone with the Eurasian Economic Union. It also included a mutual understanding from both governments to strike an agreement between their foreign ministries that will allow the Russian Centre of Science and Culture to operate in Phnom Penh.

Nikiforov also found time to meet with Cambodian Minister of Post and Telecommunications Prak Sokhon as part of his official visit to the Kingdom.
