Shlemenko KOs Halsey in 25 Seconds

On June 1, St. Petersburg hosted the M-1 Challenge 79 MMA event as part of SPIEF 2017. The card was headlined by MMA legend, Russia’s own Alexander Shlemenko, and Brandon Halsey from the United States. In the end, it took Shlemenko just 25 seconds to avenge his 2014 submission loss to the American with a crushing kick to the body followed by a series of strikes to earn the TKO victory.

M-1 Challenge is known for its sell-out crowds, and it was no different at Jubilee Palace of Sports. Not a single ticket was left on the day of the event, and many fans couldn’t get in to watch the fights. Politicians, actors, pop musicians and, of course, legends of Russian sport can often be seen in the crowd at M-1 Challenge events. And there were plenty of SPIEF 2017 guests and participants at the June 1 card, including, among others, Head of the Republic of Ingushetia Yunus-bek Yevkurov, Prime Minister of the Republic of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov, President of Moldova Igor Dodon, Governor of Omsk Region Viktor Nazarov, Head of the Komi Republic Sergey Gaplikov, Commander of the Russian Airborne Troops Andrey Serdyukov and President of New Stream Group Dmitry Mazurov. The dozens of guests of honour and thousands of fans in attendance at the jam-packed arena were treated to an exciting night of MMA action that featured 12 gripping bouts. The event was broadcast live by more than a dozen TV channels in over 100 countries. MMA is developing rapidly around the world, and М-1 Challenge 79 added a new and memorable chapter to the history of this young sport, proving once again that the M-1 Global brand is one of the industry’s leaders.
