Work on eastern gas pipeline to China on schedule

Work on the so-called eastern gas supply route from Russia to China is proceeding according to schedule, Russian Ambassador to China Andrey Denisov said in an interview with Russian media.

“Following the signing of an agreement on the eastern gas route in 2014, work has been carried out as planned on both the Russian and Chinese sections… In short, the contract is being implemented successfully and precisely to schedule”, Mr. Denisov announced.

Turning to the western route, the Russian Ambassador noted that experts from both sides are in constant communication. “When it comes to gas issues, no one, including myself, can currently predict the outcome. With the subject being so complex and the intended cooperation long-term, specialists are engaged in rather intense, regular negotiations, which are set to continue”, he said.

At the end of May 2014, Gazprom and CNPC signed an agreement on supplying Russian gas to China via the eastern route. The contract, concluded for a period of 30 years, provides for supplies of Russian gas to China at a rate of 38 billion cubic metres a year via the Power of Siberia main gas pipeline.

The length of the Russian part of the pipeline will be some 3,000 kilometres. In its final configuration, the pipeline will stretch from the Kovykta field in Irkutsk Region through the Chayanda field in Yakutia to the city of Blagoveshchensk in Amur Region. The pipeline will then cross the Russian–Chinese border across the Amur River, from where its Chinese section will stretch 3,170 kilometres from the city of Heihe to Shanghai Province.
