Oreshkin: Russia’s economy is starting year on the rise

Russia’s economy is showing more confidence, and is entering 2017 in a state of growth, the country’s Minister of Economic Development Maxim Oreshkin told journalists.

“Today we discussed issues related to the economic situation. There is definite good news here: the economy is entering 2017 with more confidence, in a state of economic growth. We have seen an improvement in business sentiment. Business confidence indices are now at 2011–2012 levels, the highest in five or six years”, he said, following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and government ministers.

Mr. Oreshkin noted that a number of sectors were already showing gains. “This boost for the economy is already being reflected in various indicators, including increased rates of growth and industrial production compared to mid-2016. Rail freight and electricity consumption are also increasing, even taking into account the cold weather, which has, of course, also affected this indicator”, he noted.
