Business breakfast Australia – Russia

About the business breakfast

Business breakfast titled Australia–Russia Business Re-connection: How and Why? will take place during the starting day of SPIEF.

Co-organizer: Australia-Russia Dialogue
Date: 23 May 2018
Venue: Business breakfast hall 1, ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre
Time: 11:00–12:30

In 2017, Russia and Australia marked 75 years of diplomatic relations, but interaction in the international arena between the countries is limited. Alongside the volatile political climate, geographical distance and transport costs, Russia–Australia economic cooperation has also suffered from a lack of awareness regarding investment potential and the countries’ mutual interests. Russia and Australia have similar economic conditions: large territory, rich mineral and energy resources, environmental and climactic challenges. Russia is now seeking to ‘rebalance’ its strategic orientation towards Asia-Pacific region where Australia is one of the key players. Thus, the countries are slowly facing incremental opportunities to re-engage on business level, especially in the Russian Far East. This business breakfast is a step towards closer interaction between the Russian and Australian business communities and towards the development of mutually beneficial business connections.

Key topics of discussion: regional cooperation (Russian Far East), energy and resources, agriculture, science and technology, governance (building a trust economy), finance and fund management, education and cultural ties.

Moderators:
Dorothy Horsfield, Fellow of the Australian Studies Institute, Australian National University
Alexey Goncharov, Secretary, Committee Member, Australia Russia Dialogue
